Vienna, Austria, June 1961: While covering the Vienna summit meeting, Stars and Stripes photographer Gus Schuettler found himself face-to-face with a man feared by millions of American schoolchildren of the era for his shoe-pounding theatrics and “we will bury you” rhetoric. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev was leaving a meeting with President John F. Kennedy that was later revealed to have been contentious.
