The Space Force has taken another step to establish its own identity by rolling out distinctive physical fitness uniforms.

An ensemble of gray shirt and shorts and blue warm-up pants and jacket will become standard issue for guardians in basic training, according to a Space Force news release March 8.

“This is more than a uniform rollout, this is the first finalized service-specific uniform that Guardians can wear with pride,” Maj. Gen. Steven Whitney, Space Force director of staff, said in the release.

The dark gray shirt features the Space Force delta on the front top left and the service acronym on both sleeves. The dark blue shorts come in two lengths, above or below the knee, with the delta symbol on the left.

The uniforms are made of soft, quick-drying material to help curb sweat and odor; the shorts are designed for running and composed of breathable, moisture-wicking material. The clothing will be available in both men’s and women’s sizes, rather than unisex, for a better fit, according to the release.

Guardians will also have the option to wear a zip-up long sleeve jacket and long pants in colder climates.

Making the new PT uniform available to the force was delayed, in part, by material shortages and supply-chain delays that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the release.

“From the word ‘go’ we have been committed to keeping Guardian feedback at the forefront of developing service-specific uniforms,” Catherine Lovelady, Space Force change management team program analyst, said in the release. “We are grateful to our partners at the Air Force Uniform Office who helped make this a reality for Guardians.”

Guardians should expect to see the new clothing on shelves in a few months at Peterson, Schriever, Buckley, Vandenberg and Patrick Space Force bases, Los Angeles Air Force Base and at the Pentagon, the release states.

“The Space Force is committed to making the Guardian experience something that our service members can be proud of,” Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivegna said in the release. “The uniform connects Guardians to each other and their service. It represents our spirit and our strength operating as one team.”
