Groton, Conn. (Tribune News Service) — A new submarine has joined the fleet at Naval Submarine Base New London.
USS Albany (SSN-753), a Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine, arrived at the base on Thursday, the U.S. Navy said.
The USS Albany, and its 134-person crew, joins Submarine Squadron 4. The submarine was commissioned in 1990. It is 360 feet long and can reach speeds above 25 knots. The USS Albany’s previous homeport was Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. It was built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Va.
“I can speak for all of us when I say we are excited to be in the Submarine Capitol of the World,” said Cmdr. Adam Nebenzahl, the commanding officer of USS Albany, according to a Navy press release.
“We invested significant amounts of time at sea this year improving our warfighting readiness in parallel with this change of homeport. We’re looking forward to improving our material readiness with our new teammates here in Groton. Our team’s combined mission is to return Albany to the fleet on time, materially and operationally ready for combat.”
