YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — A Navy sailor assigned to a warship in Japan died less than a week after he critically injured himself on Dec. 24, the U.S. 7th Fleet announced Tuesday.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Romario Clennon, an operations specialist aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Ralph Johnson, ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Dec. 30, 7th Fleet spokeswoman Cmdr. Megan Greene said by email Tuesday.

“Our deepest condolences go out to OS3 Clennon’s family, friends and colleagues who are impacted by this tragic loss,” she wrote.

No additional information was available as of Tuesday, and the incident is under investigation, Greene said.

Clennon, of Atlanta, was aboard the Ralph Johnson when the incident occurred, 7th Fleet spokeswoman Lt. Kristina Wiedemann said by email on Dec. 28.

He was not identified by 7th Fleet in its first report of the incident.

He enlisted in the Navy on Sept. 9, 2021, and trained at the Recruit Training Command and Surface Warfare Engineering School until November of that year, according to a biography provided by 7th Fleet. He reported to the Ralph Johnson on Jan. 4, 2022.

During his career, Clennon was awarded the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
