CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Japanese police arrested a Marine over the weekend on suspicion of trespassing on an Okinawa resident’s third-floor balcony.

Lance Cpl. Edgar Jesus Lopezvicente, 20, was still in the custody of Naha police Tuesday after his Saturday arrest, a spokesman for Okinawa prefectural police said by phone Tuesday.

A homeowner identified Lopezvicente as the man he saw on his balcony in the city’s Tomari district about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the spokesman said. Arresting officers described the Marine, assigned to Camp Foster, as “clearly drunk,” but he declined a Breathalyzer test of his blood-alcohol content.

Lopezvicente, picked up 300 yards from the home, recalled no wrongdoing, the spokesman said. Some government officials in Japan speak to the media on condition of anonymity as a requirement of their employment.

Police could not explain how the Marine got over the high walls surrounding the property to reach the balcony, the spokesman said. The homeowner reported no damage.

A case against Lopezvicente for breaking into a residence was submitted Sunday to the Naha District Public Prosecutors Office, the spokesman said. The offense is punishable by up to three years in prison and a $700 fine, according to the Japanese penal code.
