Three children died at a North Carolina military base on the same day, officials said.

The deaths were reported over the weekend on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, roughly 125 miles southeast of Raleigh, N.C.

“We are aware of the tragic passing of three dependent children in two separate and unrelated incidents on MCB Camp Lejeune April 16, and offer our deepest condolences to the families of those affected,” Maj. Matt Finnerty of the U.S. Marine Corps told McClatchy News in an email.

While officials didn’t reveal how the children died, WCTI and WNCT reported there were no shootings involved. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is investigating, according to the news outlets.

“Out of respect for the families and the investigative process, we are not providing additional information and NCIS does not comment on or confirm details relating to ongoing investigations,” Finnerty wrote.
