An Orlando pilot’s plane didn’t make it to land before crash landing into the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Keys Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

After the 10:18 crash, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said, pilot Adam Barney got picked up by MCSO deputies about 3 miles off Sawyer Key and taken to paramedics waiting at Cudjoe Key.

There were no other passengers on the plane, an fixed wing, multi-engine Aero Commander 500 S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Eric Rodriguez said the plane sank.

Kristen Livengood, spokeswoman for Monroe County Fire Rescue, said Barney radioed air traffic controllers before the plane went down that he was experiencing engine trouble and was going to make a water landing.

Barney was brought back to Venture Out Resorts, a Cudjoe Key neighborhood, to be medically evaluated by medics, but he refused to be taken to the hospital, Livengood said.
