GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — A U.S. soldier was killed Tuesday night after his car crashed into a tree on a forested state road between Vilseck and Freihung.

The 21-year-old, assigned to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, was not named by German authorities. The regiment is based at Rose Barracks in Vilseck. Freihung is about 7 miles east of the base.

Capt. Misael Saldivar, an Army spokesman from V Corps, declined comment Wednesday on the crash due to an investigation. The Army typically releases the name of a soldier who has died 24 hours after the next-of-kin has been notified.

The soldier was driving a Ford Fusion, which left the road at about 8:25 p.m., struck a tree and immediately caught fire, Auerbach police said in a statement. The speed limit on that road is roughly 62 mph.

The road was blocked for several hours following the crash.
