STUTTGART, Germany — The death of a U.S. soldier during a logistics operation in Germany supporting the American military mission to deter Russian aggression is under investigation, military officials said.
Spc. Jaylin Perez, 32, died Tuesday from injuries in a rail accident near Berlin, U.S. Army Europe and Africa said in a statement Friday. German first responders evacuated Perez to a hospital that specializes in severe electrical burns, USAREUR-AF said.
Perez was found unresponsive during a cargo security inspection of U.S. military equipment moving by rail, the statement said. The accident happened July 2, USAREUR-AF said Monday.
He was deployed in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a U.S. European Command mission that was launched after the Kremlin’s 2014 Ukraine invasion, which led to Russian annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.
Perez was a member of the 200th Military Police Command, headquartered at Fort Meade, Md., and was attached to the 51st Military Police Battalion out of South Carolina.
Perez served with distinction while mobilized to Europe, Maj. Gen. Susie Kuilan, commander of 200th Military Police Command, said in the statement, adding that “his loss is felt deeply.”
U.S. and German authorities are investigating, the Army said.
The accident involving Perez is the third fatal occurrence the service has experienced in Europe this year.
