AVIANO, Italy — The search is still on five days after a 173rd Airborne Brigade soldier walked out of his quarters at Aviano Air Base and disappeared.

Pvt. Angel Gonzales was reported absent by his unit and is now considered AWOL, brigade spokeswoman Capt. Jennifer French said Monday.

Gonzales is a cannon crewmember who was stationed in Grafenwoehr, Germany, and was in Aviano for a training exercise. He was part of a parachute detail Thursday night and left voluntarily during the early morning hours the following day, French said.

Brigade soldiers from Grafenwoehr were in Aviano for a routine airborne training operation, according to French.

The unit searched the immediate area for four days before heading back to Germany, French said, adding that as of Tuesday, Gonzales had not been seen at any local hospital, been detained by a law enforcement agency or shown up at a customs control point.

French said an Army Criminal Investigative Division agent told her that the agency was notified last week of Gonzales’ disappearance but isn’t looking into it because there is no indication that Gonzales was threatened or that a third party is involved.

Authorities at the U.S. Army base in Vilseck, Germany, have opened a missing person case regarding Gonzales, French said.
