An American soldier stationed at a base in Qatar as part of a mission to defeat the Islamic State group has died, the Defense Department said.

Staff Sgt. Felix A. Berrios was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve when he died Friday at Al Udeid Air Base, the department said Sunday in a statement. The death was not combat-related.

Berrios, 33, was from Houston, the Pentagon said. He was assigned to the 25th Signal Battalion, 160th Signal Brigade.

He joined the military in 2009 and served as a cable systems installer and recruiter, a statement from Network Enterprise Technology Command of Fort Huachuca, Ariz., said Wednesday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Staff Sgt. Berrios’s family, friends and colleagues in their time of loss,” Maj. Gen. Christopher Eubank, leader of the command, said in a statement.

Berrios received awards and decorations indicating service in Afghanistan and South Korea, and he deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve as a training room sergeant this year.

Operation Inherent Resolve was established in 2014 to fight ISIS in Iraq and Syria. The U.S. began operating out of Al Udeid, now the largest American air base in the Middle East, in 2001.

Berrios’ death is under investigation, the statement said.
