CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — An airman assigned to Kadena Air Base has been fined $1,500 for setting fire to a rooftop tool shed in Chatan town earlier this year.

The Naha Summary Court on Friday convicted Staff Sgt. Mason Laubach, 27, of arson and trespassing in the January incident, a spokeswoman for Naha District Court said by phone Monday.

Laubach, arrested Jan. 15 and held until Feb. 3, was fined but received no further jail time, the spokeswoman said.

He has 14 days to appeal, according to the prosecutor’s office website.

Police originally held Laubach on suspicion of stealing the equivalent of $8 from a parked car and starting a fire that destroyed the shed and the tools inside.

A Breathalyzer test on Jan. 15 measured Laubach’s blood-alcohol content at 0.12%, four times Japan’s legal driving limit of 0.03%, a city police spokesman said at the time.

Government spokespeople in Japan are routinely required to speak to the media only on condition of anonymity.
