VILSECK, Germany – The undefeated Heidelberg boys basketball team celebrated its fourth win of the young season Saturday by finishing off a weekend sweep of Vilseck behind some gritty defensive play.

The Lions allowed only two baskets in the first half of Saturday’s game, which officially ended midway through the the third quarter with Heidelberg ahead 48-9. The two teams finished the game with a running clock and did not officially keep score.

Friday night was much the same, except it finished even earlier — at halfime with the Lions up 48-8.

Stirling Thomas led the scoring for the Lions on Saturday with 13 points. Devin Meachuna had nine points and Chase Boone seven. Calvin Hickman had four points and Cedrell Sanders three for Vilseck

“We had a lot of chemistry because we have basically the same team as last year,” Thomas said after the win. “We are hoping to go undefeated and take it all. We had a lot of problems last week on defense but not this week.”

Thomas credited the strong defensive performance to a midweek scrimmage the team had that kept them fresh for the game.

“If we keep this progress – we could really be something special,” said Lions coach Ron Merriwether of the Lions potential this season. “We’ve just got to keep our heads grounded and know we have to work hard to achieve our goal of making it to that title game.”

On Friday, Boone had 15 points and six rebounds while Eugene Jones had nine points, six assists and three steals.
