Darren "D.J." Douglass continues to emerge as an offensive weapon on a Kadena football team already loaded with them.

The senior receiver caught only one pass Friday, but it was a huge one, a 32-yard touchdown that sealed the Panthers’ third straight Okinawa Activities Council championship. Kadena shut out Kubasaki for the third straight time, 14-0 at Kadena Air Base’s McDonald Stadium.

It was Douglass’ second key touchdown catch in as many games. His TD reception a week earlier broke Kubasaki’s back in a 29-0 victory.

"People knew that Stan (Schrock) could catch and certainly knew that Brandon (Harris) could, too," coach Sergio Mendoza said. "We were saving D.J. as a surprise. He has as good of hands as the others. It’s exciting to have him as an option."

The Panthers (3-0) secured their third straight berth in a Far East Class AA semifinal. Kadena hosts Guam High on Nov. 1.

Elsewhere on Friday:

Yokota (5-1) captured its 10th straight Kanto Plain Association of Secondary Schools title. Junior quarterback DeEric Harvin rang up 293 all-purpose yards, threw for three touchdowns and intercepted three passes as the Panthers routed winless Zama American 49-12.

Alex Busam scored four times and American School In Japan (3-1) scored 25 unanswered points in a 38-13 romp over Nile C. Kinnick (1-4) in another Kanto Plain game.

Brian Sanders, Mike Moser and Travis Smith each scored touchdowns as Guam High (2-3) snapped a three-game skid, winning 21-14 at John F. Kennedy (0-5).

And the DODDS-Korea Football League Class A best-of-three series evened at 1-1 when Michael Gilliam scored twice and Osan American (1-2) snapped a nine-game league losing skid 21-14 at Daegu American (1-3).

Okinawa

Kadena 14, Kubasaki 0: Douglass sent a homecoming throng of 1,200 into hysterics by outleaping Kubasaki defensive back Drake Kozmoski for the TD pass thrown by Lamar Stevens with 7:51 left.

That settled a game that appeared in doubt long after Harris put Kadena ahead 7-0 on a 19-yard romp early in the second period. Kubasaki kept knocking at the door, but Kadena’s defense answered every time.

"We had to grow so much," Mendoza said of a team that lost many seniors from last season. "These guys worked hard in the summer. They came together and started believing in the intangibles we talked about. They may not have the talent of last year, but they have the heart."

Harris ran 14 times for 99 yards, Stevens ran up 89 yards total offense and Thomas McDonald recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass.

Marquette Warren led Kubasaki with 82 yards on 27 carries. But the Dragons were done in by three turnovers, giving them 14 in three losses to Kadena, and 70 yards on 10 penalties.

"Too many mistakes. Our offense is still sputtering," Dragons coach Fred Bales said. "We [tried] a few things, but they had the answers. They’re a great team. We wish them well in the Far East playoffs."

Japan

Yokota 49, Zama American 12: The Kanto Plain title was "one of our goals to start the season. I’m glad we got that accomplished," said coach Tim Pujol, whose Panthers swept the season series from the Trojans at Camp Zama, Japan.

Harvin was 7-for-11 for 179 yards. Derick Seward ran for 191 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, Andy Silva had five catches for 100 yards, two scores and 7½ tackles, Rainey Daley caught a touchdown pass and Andrew Conkling recorded 8½ tackles, including two sacks.

Michael Spencer led Zama with 111 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Ryan Blackstock ran 13 times for 77 yards and Michael Jorgensojn ran for a TD.

ASIJ 38, Kinnick 13: At Tokyo, Ryan Christianson also added two touchdowns for the Mustangs, who pulled away from a 13-13 third-quarter tie in sweeping the season series from the Red Devils.

Kinnick’s lone bright spot was Tyree Hunt, the team’s leading ground gainer, who ran 21 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns. He has 695 yards and eight touchdowns on 72 carries this season.

Guam

Guam High 21, John F. Kennedy 14: At Upper Tumon, Guam, Aaron Cosey was 5-for-10 for 97 yards, including a 5-yard TD pass to Smith that helped the Panthers race out to a 21-point third quarter lead. At that point, coach Brandon Miller pulled his starters and went with his second unit to give them playing time.

Evan Marshall caught three passes for 84 yards, Brian Sanders ran 13 times for 69 yards, D’Andre Weaver had a team-high 78 yards on seven rushes and Jacob Wright had 11 tackles.

South Korea

Osan American 21, Daegu American 14: At Camp Walker, South Korea, Adonte’ Murry also scored on a short run for the Cougars, who kept ramming the ball between the tackles against a Warriors squad outmanned by injuries.

"Our guys really came together," Osan coach Duke Allen said. "We played smashmouth football tonight."

Daegu answered on David Martinez’s 22-yard TD run and Chris Ford’s 62-yard scoring scamper, but lost quarterback Trey Griffin in the third quarter to a knee injury.
