BRUNSSUM, Netherlands -- The visiting Rota Admirals improved to 2-0 on Saturday with a comprehensive 48-8 win over the combined AFNORTH/Brussels squad.
Andres Torrez ran for 167 yards and three touchdowns on as many carries in the first half to help build a substantial early lead. The Admirals scored three more touchdowns on returned interceptions - by Torrez, D'Angelo Gallardo and Sam Gallardo - to erase any hope of a home-team comeback.
But the merged roster of AFNORTH and Brussels - combined in a last-minute decision that saved both programs' seasons from forfeiture - showed some offensive prowess. Brussels student Tim Wilkinson launched a 29-yard touchdown strike to AFNORTH's Trent Weldon in the first half, the highlight of an 8-for-17, 183-yard throwing effort marred by the trio of pick-six interceptions.
Rota opens its three-game regional slate next weekend against visiting International School of Brussels. The team will clinch a winning regular season with a victory.
AFNORTH/Brussels will hit the road in search of its first victory of the season, visiting Baumholder on Friday night for the Bucs' homecoming and both teams' regional opener.
