The former commander of the Navy’s 6th fleet in Europe has been nominated as assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Vice Adm. Frank Pandolfe currently serves as the director for strategic plans and policy, or J-5, for the Joint Chiefs. He would retain his current rank if he accepts the presidential nomination and Congress approves it. He would replace Vice Adm. Kurt W. Tidd
Pandolfe, a Naval Academy graduate and surface warfare officer, commanded U.S. 6th Fleet in Naples, Italy, from 2011-2013. His prior commands include the destroyer USS Mitscher, Destroyer Squadron 18 and the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group while it was deployed for operations in Afghanistan from 2008-2009.
Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford is the incoming Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
