WASHINGTON — Somber moments of reflection at monuments to our nation's fallen heroes combined with a festive parade through the streets of the nation's capital on Memorial Day 2014.

Large crowds gathered at the World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War memorials on the national mall Monday morning to leave mementoes and remember those who sacrificed their lives for their country.

Later in the day, Constitution Ave. was lined with spectators for the annual parade in which Lt. Col. Richard Cole, one of four remaining members of Doolittle's Raiders from World War II, served as grand marshal. Other celebrities on hand included actor Gary Sinise and Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
