SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — The USS Germantown got a new commander in Australia on Friday, capping a successful round of joint military and humanitarian training exercises.

Cmdr. Carol McKenzie relieved Cmdr. A.D. Hull during a ceremony in Brisbane, where the dock-landing ship was in port following the Talisman Sabre 2011 exercise, according to a Navy press release. Previously, McKenzie was the ship’s executive officer.

During his tenure as commander, Hull oversaw the ship during Operation Tomodachi and recovery operations of the South Korea vessel Cheonan, which was sunk by North Korea. Hull is heading to Washington, D.C., where he will report to the staff of the chief of naval personnel.

Talisman Sabre 2011 ended last week and involved some 14,000 U.S. servicemembers from the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Army, in addition to Australian and Canadian servicemembers.
