Cyber attack targets South Korean agencies
SEOUL ---The websites of 29 South Korean government agencies and private institutions were attacked Friday morning by computer codes, according to South Korean media reports.
Those hit in the denial-of-service attack included the president’s office, the Ministry of National Defense, the National Assembly, the Unification Ministry and Kookmin Bank, according to Yonhap News. The cyber attack shut down some of the sites.
Yonhap also reported that U.S. Forces Korea websites had been attacked. USFK spokesman David Oten would not comment on whether U.S. military computers had been affected by the virus, citing policy meant to protect operational security.
Some South Korean media reports speculated that North Korea had caused the attacks. North Korea has threatened retaliation for the ongoing U.S.-South Korean Foal Eagle/Key Resolve exercise, which began Monday.
