NAPLES, Italy — The U.S. Navy continued its search Thursday for a sailor who has been missing from the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer since Tuesday afternoon, the Navy stated in a press release.

Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from the Boxer, aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, and guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio, as well as a P-3 patrol aircraft, have searched for the sailor from the air, while the Boxer, the Anzio and guided-missile destroyer USS Mitscher conducted a surface search, according to a 5th Fleet news release.

The sailor’s family has been notified of the disappearance, however the sailor’s name and sex are being withheld, 5th Fleet spokesman Lt. Frederick Martin said.

The Boxer is based in San Diego and has been deployed to 5th Fleet since February as the flagship of Amphibious Squadron 1. It is conducting operations in the Gulf of Aden.
