Admission data: In 2009, a total 4,137 students, both first-time freshmen and transfer students, applied to Jacksonville State University. Of those 4,137 applicants, 3,576 were accepted to JSU. SAT/ACT scores: 86% of students submitted their ACT scores, while the remaining 19% submitted SAT scores. The majority of first-time, first-year freshmen who took the SAT had scores ranging from 400-499.

The composite ACT score for first-time, first-year freshmen at JSU is 19.8. For English, it is 20.1; Reading is 20.6; Math is 18.9; and Science is 20.3. 62% of first-time freshmen at JSU were in the top half of their high school graduating class.

Enrollment: In 2009, there were 7,884 undergraduate students and 1, 467 graduate students, for a grand total of 9,351 students. Female: 5,512 students

Costs: In the 2008 – 2009 school year, the average tuition was $5,700 a year for undergraduate students. Books cost an estimated $1,100 per year. Average cost of on-campus room and board per year was $4, 215.Is service accepted as credit toward a degree? Advanced standing in accordance with that which is recommended by the American Council on Education and in accordance with University policy will be given to veterans who apply for it. Veterans desiring such credit must make application to the Registrar’s Office by completing the appropriate forms and presenting a copy of their discharge and an official statement of educational experience and training or military transcript. Why does the school like military students? Jacksonville State University has long been a military-friendly school. Fort McClellan was our close neighbor from 1917 until it was closed in 1999, and the whole area has historically been a popular retirement destination for military families. The Alabama National Guard still calls McClellan home and there is much collaboration with our ROTC students. What GI Bill/Tuition Assistance benefits are offered/available? Starting Fall 2009, increased to ten semesters of tuition and required books. Each chapter or bill receives a monthly check which varies according to each chapter.

Both Active Duty and National Guard Reserves can receive tuition assistance along with their monthly check. Do you offer online degrees/distance learning programs? Yes! There are eighteen different degrees and programs that can be completed solely online through JSU’s distance education program. What programs/services are available specifically to military students? JSU has its own ROTC Department, along with a Veterans Affairs office dedicated to serving the needs, questions and concerns of veterans.

What is your policy on involuntary activation for military service? Students will go through ROTC to do their official withdrawal from school when called to active duty. There, they have the choice of either taking incompletes from their courses or withdrawing from the semester. Students are not penalized when called to active duty through Veterans Affairs benefits, and will still receive their assistance up until the date of withdrawal.
