Those who are enthralled by a story told in a single photograph should plan a visit to Visa pour l’Image, an international photojournalism festival opening Saturday and running through Sept. 15 in Perpignan, a medie-val French city nestled at the foot of the Pyrenees and close to the Spanish border.

Organized to highlight the importance of press photography, it attracts thousands of photojournalists from around the world, press agencies and manufacturers of photo equipment.

The event also offers activities for non-professionals. Visitors can take in more than 20 photo exhibitions at venues throughout the city from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. free of charge. The World Press Photo exhibition, a traveling showcase of the best of press photography from the previous year, also makes an appearance in Perpignan. From Sept. 2-7, evening slide shows at the outdoor venue of Campo Santo review both headline news and events that passed largely unnoticed over the past year. Tributes, retrospectives and award ceremonies round out the program.
