RAF MILDENHALL, England — An airman assigned to the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath has died after being struck by a vehicle driven by a fellow airman on the main road outside RAF Mildenhall on Monday night, according to a U.S. Air Force press release. The name of the dead airman is being withheld until family can be notified.

“The Liberty Wing suffered a tragic loss last night,” the release quoted Col. Bill Lewis, 48th Fighter Wing vice commander, as saying. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the Liberty Airman killed in yesterday’s accident.”

The cause is being investigated by the Suffolk Constabulary, which said the driver of the car, an airman from RAF Mildenhall’s 352nd Special Operations Group, was not in custody as of Tuesday afternoon. His name was not released.
