A Marine assigned to Camp H.M. Smith has tested positive for coronavirus, the first such positive test for the Marine Corps in Hawaii, the Marine Corps said Sunday.

“The Marine returned Friday from training and annual leave on the U.S. mainland, and proceeded to Tripler Army Medical Center with symptoms of COVID-19 infection,” Marine Corps Forces Pacific said in a statement.

Camp H.M. Smith, on Oahu, is the headquarters for Marine Corps Forces Pacific and Indo-Pacific Command.

The Marine was treated and discharged that same day and is in quarantine in off-base quarters, the statement said.

“The Marine Corps is committed to ensure the health protection of our force and family members while also protecting our local communities, and we will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with U.S. health agencies,” the Marine Corps statement said.

On Saturday the Army reported that a 25th Infantry Division soldier stationed at Schofield Barracks tested positive for coronavirus, making him the first U.S. service member to test positive in Hawaii.

The soldier is in isolation at his off-base residence. He traveled to Las Vegas on March 13 and returned to Oahu two days later, the Army said in a statement.

The Army announced Hawaii’s first military-related coronavirus infection Thursday after a civilian employee at Tripler tested positive. The worker had recently traveled to New York and began developing symptoms after returning to Oahu, the Army said in a statement.
