SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — Vice Adm. John M. Bird, commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet, was nominated by President Barack Obama to be director of Navy staff, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.

In the new position, Bird would be working out of the Chief of Naval Operations office at the Pentagon. Bird has served as 7th Fleet commander since July 2008.
