Citing a player shortage, Matthew C. Perry withdrew Tuesday from the Far East High School Girls Division II Basketball Tournament, school and tournament officials announced.

“There were a number of factors in this decision,” Perry athletics director George Williams said by e-mail Tuesday. “Injuries, low numbers, passport issues, etc. In the end, it became a safety concern with too few girls participating.”

The team is 0-13 this season and finished eighth in a 10-team field in last year's season-ending tournament.

The withdrawal leaves the tournament, scheduled for Feb. 17-19 at Daegu, with just eight schools, including the host Warriors, Osan and Humphreys of South Korea; International School of the Sacred Heart, E.J. King, Zama and Robert D. Edgren of Japan; and Okinawa Christian School International.
