Kadena Panthers

2016 season record — 6-2 overall, 5-1 vs. Division I regular-season opponents, lost 35-18 at American School In Japan in Far East D-I title game Nov. 12.
Head coach — Sergio Mendoza, 12th season. 63-16 overall, Pacific-record five D-I titles (2007, ’09-’10, ’14-’15).
Returning players — 12.
Returning starters — 6.
Key performers — Cody Sego, Sr., QB (302 yards, 9 TDs, 52 carries; 28-for-65, 504 yards, 5 TDs); Uriah Morris, Jr., FB-LB (519 yards, 7 TDs, 68 carries); Brayden Frederick, So., FB-LB (256 yards, 51 carries); Owen Sinning, Sr., RB-FL-DB.
Strengths — Good experience in the backfield. “Good football intelligence,” Mendoza says. Good team speed. Best summer of conditioning Kadena’s put in, Mendoza said.
Drawbacks — Lack of experience in the interior.
Overview — Rebuilding. A year ago, the team was rebuilding the backfield; this year, it’s rebuilding the offensive front five and defensive front seven. The backfield will be solid; just a question of how quickly the interior will grow.
