MANGILAO, Guam – Friday’s game against Father Duenas Memorial proved doubly tough for Guam High football.

Not only did the Panthers lose for the first time this season, 35-7 to the Friars at George Washington High School – they lost senior quarterback Jujuan King to a left knee sprain. He’s the second of two King brothers on the roster lost to injury; junior Juan fractured his right leg in the Aug. 21 opener.

“They played some good football,” Panthers coach Jacob Dowdell said of the Friars (3-0). “They made better plays than we did. FD was the better team tonight. We had some opportunities early on in the game, but we had some unfortunate penalties happen.”

Xavier Jones accounted for the Panthers’ lone touchdown, an 80-yard interception return early in the third quarter. From there, the Friars scored 23 unanswered points to close. “Their offensive line took over in the second half,” Dowdell said.

The line created repeated openings for running backs De’Aundre Cruz and Jake Benito, who combined for 318 rushing yards and five touchdowns in the victory for the Friars.

“We’ll get ourselves back on track and play hard against JFK,” Dowdell said of the Panthers’ next game, 7 p.m. Sept. 12 at John F. Kennedy.
