CAMP WALKER, South Korea – Daegu found itself in a two-touchdown hole seemingly before the game even began. Humphreys scored on its first play, then after stopping the Warriors on their first offensive series found the end zone on another big play to lead 12-0.
Then, the Warriors ground game and defense pulled out all the stops.
DeMarco Andrews rushed for three touchdowns, Daegu piled up 440 rushing yards and the defense recorded four sacks as the Warriors scored 38 unanswered points to take command of the Division II race by beating the Blackhawks 38-12 on Friday at Camp Walker’s Kelly Field.
“Good day to be a Warrior,” coach Ken Walter said after Daegu improved to 2-0 on the season, outscoring its foes 62-12. Humphreys fell to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the D-II standings.
Walter had started some new players on Friday, and he said it seemed like Humphreys was going right at them. Tyreke Slaughter scored from 61 yards out on the game’s first play, then Dai’Quan Wilson ripped off a 48-yard touchdown run on the second series.
“We scored seemingly every time we had the ball after that,” Walter said. “The offensive line took over, the defense adjusted and they had a hard time sustaining drives after that.”
Andrews, whom Walter said was “money” on Friday, finished with 121 yards on nine attempts. DeAndre Rosalie added 167 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries and Josh McCaw – “He was the workhorse tonight” – totaled 102 yards on 12 carries.
Hassan Hanslip returned a punt 40 yards for a touchdown. Zach Fowler had nine tackles, Taylor Mendenhal a sack and a fumble recovery and John Michael Medallo also recovered a fumble.
“Good start for us. Then the floodgates burst,” Blackhawks coach Aaron Mundy said. “They outhustled us and they outhit us and that was the ball game.”
Slaughter left the game with an injury in the fourth quarter, leaving running back Stephen Conkright doing most of the heavy lifting for Humphreys. He finished with 78 yards on 10 tries.
Daegu has next week off, while Humphreys travels to Osan for a 7 p.m. Friday contest.
