YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — Yongsan-area softball teams won two of three titles in the 8th U.S. Army softball tournaments last weekend at Lombardo Field FourPlex on Yongsan’s South Post.

Coming out of the loser’s bracket in the double-elimination company-level tournament, 17th Aviation beat 18th Medical 17-4 and 15-1 in an all-Yongsan championship, avenging a 10-9 loss in the winner’s bracket final.

The Area II women of Yongsan defeated Area I 15-13 in the title game.

The only Yongsan team that missed a championship was the men’s senior Area II team, which won the first of two final games 10-9 but ran out of gas in the second final, losing 9-8 to Area III of Camp Humphreys.

8th Army names teams for Army Ten-Miler

YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — 8th U.S. Army sports director Tom Higgins on Monday released the list of runners tentatively slated to represent the command in the Army Ten-Miler Oct. 24 in Washington, D.C.

The 8th Army’s men’s team took fourth last year and the women placed sixth, and officials are hoping for a better showing this year.

“We have six men who finished in the top hundred last year, which out of 16,000 to 17,000 [entrants] is pretty good,” Higgins said. “And the women are really strong. Last year, we had maybe one or two good runners. This year we have five or six.”

The eight runners comprising the 8th Army team competed in Saturday’s 8th Army Ten-Miler at Camp Casey’s Hanson Field House.

Noreen Roberson of Camp Carroll was Saturday’s women’s open winner. She placed seventh in her age group last year in Washington.

Among the men, Saturday’s open winner Joshua Butts of Camp Casey placed 28th overall last year in Washington.

“We’re hopeful,” Higgins said.
