ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam — Military commitments have pushed the March Madness Invitational to late June, tournament director Gerry Barnes said Monday.

The third leg of the Pacific interservice Triple Crown basketball circuit, scheduled for March 23-31, has been rescheduled for June 25-July 2, “if we get the teams that have signed up,” Barnes said.

Before the postponement was announced, 13 men’s and 11 women’s teams had entered, including eight men’s and women’s base varsity squads, from Japan, Okinawa, Korea and Hawaii. Last year’s respective champions, the Osan men of Korea and Hickam women of Hawaii, were among that group.

The field also features five men’s and three women’s teams from Guam, including two commercially sponsored local clubs, as well as the Guam men’s and women’s national squads.

Teams can enter until May 15, Barnes said. The fee is $400.

Yongsan softball tournament scheduled for late May

YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — After a one-year hiatus, the first leg of the Pacific interservice softball Grand Slam circuit is returning to Yongsan on Memorial Day weekend, organizers said.

Entries for the Yongsan Pacificwide Invitational, now in its 13th season, are being accepted through May 14 for the tournament that’s scheduled for May 23-26 at the newly renovated Lombardo Field complex, tournament director Bennie Jackson said Monday.

The tournament was held last year at Camp Casey while the renovations were ongoing. The four-diamond complex should open this spring, Jackson said.

The invitational is open to the first 32 men’s and 16 women’s teams that sign up and submit a $200 fee, payable to MWR, 34th Support Group, by May 14. Billeting will be available, Jackson said, at no cost, with priority going to clubs outside Korea.

For information, contact Jackson at DSN 738-8608 or by e-mail at jacksonb@34sg.korea.army.mil.
