CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — For the first time since 1996, All-Navy is champion of the All-Armed Forces men’s basketball tournament.

Five sailors scored in double figures, led by Ryan Moore with 18 points, and All-Navy outshot defending champion All-Army 46 percent-36 percent Sunday in an 85-71 triumph that gave the sailors the gold.

Navy’s victory capped what All-Armed Forces sports official Ken Polk called “truly one of the most exciting Armed Forces championships ever played.” All four teams entered the final day with a chance at the gold medal.

Navy controlled its destiny, needing only to beat Army, while the soldiers needed to beat the sailors by six points or more. The Marine Corps, which went unbeaten in the first round but lost the next three, had to beat the Air Force and get help from Army.

Air Force was 0-3 in the first round but won its next three and captured the silver medal by beating the Leathernecks 75-72.
