CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Gary Chaney, a four-time All-Marine who helped lead 3rd Force Service Support Group to its first Marine Forces Pacific Regional Softball title since 1992, was selected as MVP of last week’s tournament.

Twice an All-Armed Forces outfielder, Chaney went 16-for-24 with two home runs and 11 RBIs as 3rd Force went 9-0, winning the tournament final 18-5 over Marine Corps Base Hawaii on Friday at Camp Foster Field 1.

That honor was again extended to 12-time All-Marine catcher Cherylton McRae of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. Five others received bids for the first time.

The All-Marine team competes in the All-Armed Forces tournament Aug. 18-23 at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The All-Armed Forces team heads to the Amateur Softball Association national majors tournament Aug. 29-Sept. 1 in Jackson, Miss.

First-time All-Marine camp selections were Kevin Healy of Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Philip Hand and Robert Putney of 3rd Marine Division/Expeditionary Force, Brett Eberhardt of Hawaii and Luther Gibbs of Iwakuni Air Station.
