GRAFENWÖHR, Germany — Carlen Miller scored 39 points Sunday as Katterbach’s Company B, 601st Aviation Support Battalion won the U.S. Army Europe unit-level basketball championship with a 78-68 victory over the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment out of Baumholder.

Miller averaged 30.4 points in his team’s five victories in the four-day, 14-team, double-elimination tournament.

What scoring Miller didn’t provide came from center Terrance Flemons, who averaged 18.6 points in the five victories.

Katterbach won by an average of 21.2 points.

“This team came to play,” coach Willie Jackson said. “We had great teamwork.”

After losing the 98th Area Support Group title game to the 1st Infantry Division’s Headquarter’s Company out of Würzburg the previous weekend, the soon-to-be USAREUR champs thumped Schwetzingen’s Headquarters Company, 1st Personnel Command 96-59, and Hanau’s Company B, 127th Aviation Support Battalion 77-49 on Thursday, earning a day off on Friday.

On Saturday, they defeated the Headquarters Company of the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment of Hohenfels 69-51 and the 1/6th Infantry headquarters 67-54 in the winners-bracket final.

The 1/6 infantrymen earned a second shot at Katterbach with a 79-60 victory on Sunday over Company B, 127th Aviation Support Battalion, behind 21 points from Marcus Haywood and 15 from Eric Ross.

The 1/6 Headquarters Company still had no answer for Miller and Flemons. The pair burned them for 60 and 38 points, respectively, in the winners-bracket final and title games.

Katterbach also got 22 points in the two victories from Roderick Brown.
