CAMP KINSER, Okinawa — Russ Johnson, a 5-foot-7 guard who led Marine Corps Base Hawaii to its first Marine Forces Pacifc Regional Basketball Tournament title in four years, was selected tournament MVP.

Hawaii defeated two-time defending champion 3rd Marine Division/Expeditionary Force 85-75 Friday in the title game.

Five players from the regional were selected for the All-Marine tryout camp that starts July 27 at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Reggie Brown, Robert Cobb and Demetrick Allen of Okinawa’s 3rd Force Service Support Group and Marine Corps Base Camp Butler’s Vonnes Sanders and Jeff Noel were selected for the camp. Sanders, a three-time All-Marine, is the only player who has been to a tryout camp.

They’ll battle Marines from the East and West Coast regions for berths on the All-Marine team, slated to play in the All-Armed Forces tournament Aug. 16-24 at Camp Lejeune.

Players chosen for the All-Armed Forces team will travel to Catania, Sicily, for the International Military Sports Council’s (CISM) 3rd World Military Games, scheduled for Sept. 13-23.

The MVP and All-Marine tryout camp selections were announced Saturday by Marine Corps Community Services’ Semper Fit sports officials during a ceremony at the Kinser Tri-Mod.
