CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Military commitments at Osan Air Base, South Korea, prompted officials to postpone the Far East High School Boys Class A basketball tournament one week.

Don Hobbs, Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Pacific’s Far East Activities Council chairman, announced the postponement in an e-mail Wednesday to school administrators.

The tournament’s new dates are Feb. 25-28, Hobbs announced in the e-mail. A Noncombatant Evacuation Operation slated for Osan created a conflict with the tournament, Hobbs said.

DODDS-Pacific tries to schedule season-ending Far East tournaments during the same week to prevent student-athletes from missing school for more than one week.

But in this case, Hobbs said, “We weren’t assured that we could find a new location for the tournament before Christmas. We wanted to be timely, so schools could make preparation for travel.”

In another development, DODDS-Pacific moved the Far East Class AA soccer tournaments up one day. They’re now scheduled for April 26-30.
