Jesse HanesSoccer

Vicenza

Last week: Hanes, a junior striker who transferred from Patch at the beginning of the semester, scored four times Saturday to lift the Cougars to a 4-3 victory at Milan. “It was his best game of the season,” coach Roland Sturk said in an e-mail Monday after his Cougars improved to 2-2-2, good for third place in Region IV. “Milan jumped off to the lead with an early goal, but Jesse tied it a few minutes later. He then scored a goal that temporarily gave Vicenza the lead twice, but his goal in the absolute last minute sealed the game.” Hanes’ outburst gave him five goals in just three games this season. “He has a very good striker’s attitude,” Strunk assessed. “He is going to the goal, always. The other asset he has is the ability to release his shot very quickly....” Strunk concluded with a blunt characterization of Hanes’ value to the team. “How he goes,” Strunk wrote, “will determine how far Vicenza will progress in Europeans.”

Rio Shaune HarrisTrackKaiserslautern

Last week: Harris, the reigning DODDS-Europe champion at 400 and 800 meters, won the race of the season Saturday when she won the 400 in a season-best 59.34 seconds in a six-school meet at Mons, Belgium. Harris, a junior, and teammate Marche’ Bobbs became the first high school runners this season to break the one-minute mark in the 400 when they outdueled two other runners from the last turn to the finish. Bobbs ran a 59.71, Mercedes Ash of AFNORTH finished in 62.41 and Ashley Santos of Kaiserslautern was clocked in 64.58. “It was a beautiful race…,” Kaiserslautern coach Dennis DePriest e-mailed on Monday, “and on that particular day, Harris reached the tape first.” According to DePriest, Harris, who won last year’s European 800 title in 2:33.37 and has qualified for the 2010 finale in a school-system-best so far of 2:23.55, is still deciding her European agenda. “…she will definitely run the 4x800 and 4x400,” he wrote, “with us choosing between the 400, 800 and 1,500.”
