In tune-up play for next week’s big-schools openers, the defending European Division I champion Wiesbaden Warriors overcame their local opponent, and Ramstein’s 2012 runners-up overwhelmed theirs Saturday on their home fields. The Warriors edged the Wiesbaden Phantoms 14-7, and Ramstein demolished the Hanau Ravens 63-0. Wiesbaden 14, Wiesbaden Phantoms 7: In the first game to be played on their new artificial turf, the Warriors jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead over their guests from the German league and held on to win the annual Wiesbaden Challenge.Jason Closs, who finished the game with a team-high 43 yards rushing on eight carries, ran 14 yards for the champs’ first score of the season, and Anthony Brown ran 4 yards to paydirt later in the first quarter, according to Wiesbaden coach Steve Jewell, who added that the defenses dominated thereafter, except for the Phantoms’ 58-yard second-quarter touchdown pass from Jasper Small to Robin Gemmerich.Akeem Cranfield led the Warriors’ defensive charge with two interceptions; Andre Murray contributed a third pick to the Warriors’ cause.Keyshawn Greene ran the ball five times for 38 yards for the Warriors, who are to open the defense of their D-I title Saturday at Lakenheath.Ramstein 63, Hanau 0: In sharp contrast to the Wiesbaden Challenge, Ramstein’s game against their German-league guests mainly challenged the hands of the Royals’ secondary. Ramstein’s defenders passed with flying colors by intercepting eight Hanau passes, according to Ramstein coach Carlos Amponin.Senior cornerback Colin San Jose and junior CB Robert Navarro each returned a pick for a touchdown, and the Royals also recovered two fumbles in the rout that they led 49-0 at halftime.Senior halfback Zak Boswell rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown in his debut as the replacement for graduated All-Europe tailback Jon Groteleuschen. Boswell also pulled in a touchdown pass from quarterback Brennan Lege.Ramstein is scheduled to start its 2012 campaign Saturday against the visiting Filton Academy Pride.
