NAPLES, Italy –Saturday’s rain was the only thing that could cool down the Sigonella Jaguars baseball team last weekend. Friday, the Division III Jags moved to 5-1 for the season by prevailing over two D-II schools – 9-8 over Aviano and 11-4 over Vicenza. Saturday’s games against the Northern Italy schools were rained out.

Against Aviano, Sigonella struck for seven first-inning runs. First baseman Clay Coon, according to Sigonella coach David Berryhill, had the big blow in the frame, a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double.

Aviano answered, however, and were just a run behind in the bottom of the final inning when Sigonella turned a bases-loaded grounder into a game-ending double play from shortstop Brandon Albert, who stroked two doubles in the game, to second baseman Chase Berryhill to Coon.

Against Vicenza, freshman pitching ace Luke Ostergaard struck out seven in his four innings of work, coach Berryhill reported.

Ostergaard stroked a three-run homer as part of his seven-RBI day. Marco Summerfield also homered for Sigonella, which will host unbeaten Naples on Saturday.

Vicenza (1-5) is scheduled to play at Aviano (0-6) on Saturday.
