HOHENFELS, Germany – Sometimes the sequel is just as good as the original.

The Hohenfels Tigers beat the Bitburg Barons 36-32 on Saturday, reprising the epic 38-28 upset they pulled off in last year’s Division II semifinal round.

Again, it was reigning Stars and Stripes football Athlete of the Year David Vidovic who carried Hohenfels to victory. The senior running back carried 17 times for 270 yards and three touchdowns, and spearheaded the Tiger defensive unit with a game-high 11 tackles.

But Vidovic had plenty of help in the playmaking department. Trey Briscoe ran for 89 yards and a touchdown and caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Clayton Pinheiro, and AJ Day carried three times for 19 yards and a touchdown.

Pinheiro also kept up with Vidovic’s iron-man heroics, making six tackles and an interception.

The Barons stayed close behind their own productive run game. John Blake rushed 21 times for 182 yards and a touchdown, while Curtiss Wilson carried 25 times for 119 yards and a score.

Hohenfels ended Bitburg’s record consecutive-victory streak and four-year title run with a stunning 38-28 comeback win.

The victory launched the Tigers to the Division II championship. Bitburg has yet to fully recover; though they’re safely postseason-bound, they finish the regular season at 3-2.
