BAMBERG, Germany– Down 2-0 after 20 minutes Saturday, the Bamberg Barons kept their heads, shut out the Patch Panthers the rest of the way and claimed a 3-2 Region III opening-day soccer victory.Eighteen-yard scoring strikes by Patch’s Drew Nixon and Ron Kirkemo had Patch looking forward to a 2-0 halftime lead, but Juan Palacios cut Bamberg’s deficit in half two minutes before halftime when he headed in a cross from Tyler Lewis, according to Bamberg coach Eric Jones.Lewis then got the Barons even on an unassisted goal after the second half began, and Phatanasin “I.Q.” Sandod followed by breaking free down the middle and banging home the game-winner.Bamberg keeper Roberto Bachelor, who finished the game with 11 saves, proved instrumental in the victory. He blanked Patch over the game’s final 60 minutes.Bamberg is to host Ansbach on Friday; Patch is to play at Black Forest Academy on Saturday.
