OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea — In the first big test for Far East Class A title contenders, the Pusan American girls won 3-1 Friday on Osan American’s soccer field.

“This was huge,” said Brieanna Carroll, who scored three goals for the Panthers. “This was a big test for both of us. ... our biggest game of the year. It had to be the best game for every single player on this team.”

The Panthers, who lost their season opener 7-0 to Seoul Foreign, are undefeated in six matches since that loss on March 4. On Friday, they defeated a school with more than twice the enrollment of Pusan’s of 50.

“We showed we could step up and play” against KAIAC Division I competition, Carroll said. The Panthers are in the conference’s small-schools division but compete against bigger schools in the Far East tournament.

Carroll lauded the play of forwards Meghan Sprague, Yeojin Niehaus and her freshman sister, Cassie, as well as freshmen Angie Vandersys, Nina Aaltonen and ninth-grade goalkeeper Shabraya Hays

“I had a lot of help,” said Brieanna Carroll, who has a team-leading 11 goals. “The whole team gave it 100 percent today.”

Carroll is already anticipating the rematch on April 2 and the Class A tournament in mid-May.

“A lot can happen in seven weeks,” she said. “But this was a huge confidence builder for us. We’re pretty stoked.”
