CAMP WALKER, South Korea — Camp Casey’s Anthony Redd and Anthony Luverne combined to score 43 points as the Warriors defeated host Area IV 87-73 in the men’s championship of the 5th Taegu Holiday Basketball Tournament on Friday.

In the women’s championship, tournament MVP Natoshia Williams scored 22 points and Area IV broke open what had been a one-point game at halftime, beating Han Il High School 61-42.

“It will be a happy new year for us,” Williams said.

The play of the Warriors’ big men spelled the difference against Area IV, Casey’s coach and players said.

“When we found ourselves in trouble, we had to do what was best for the team, take it down low to the big men,” Redd said.

Coach Donald C. Webb cited the play of Luverne, Ronald Markins and Corey McCoy.

“They made the difference with the inside game,” he said.

Joseph Webb of Area IV earned tournament MVP honors, but said after the final, “I’d trade that to win the tournament.”

The Warriors say they hope the title will provide the team a spark. Casey entered the tournament 5-5 and fifth place in the Korea Traveling League and 9-7 overall, but swept all eight games they played in the tournament.

“We’re hitting our stride,” Redd said. “We hope this will be a springboard, a step in the right direction.”

“This proves we’re coming together as a team and starting to play together,” Webb said.

Area IV’s women found themselves in a tight battle against a South Korean high school team, leading Han Il 26-25 at halftime.

“We came out in the second half with a little more intensity,” Williams said. “Those girls were pretty tough. We had to go back to basics, talk on defense, move around, box out on rebounds, get the ball down in the post. Fundamental basketball. That’s what won it for us.”
