BITBURG, Germany - Twelve different Bitburg running backs got their hands on the ball Saturday as the defending European D-II champion Barons blasted visiting SHAPE 41-9 and improved to 3-0 for the season.

It didn’t matter much who had the ball, according to Bitburg coach Matt Laue, as long as his front line of Adam Smith, Darian Billups, Gary Horn, Shaquille Williams and Zach Nichols was paving the way.

Kyle Edgar ran for three touchdowns, Aaron Mayfield and Austin Schmidt rushed for one score each, and Corey Evans closed out the TD parade with a 47 yard punt return TD that made the score 41-0 at halftime.

SHAPE (1-2) scored its TD in the fourth period on a 9-yard run by Ryan Valentine.

Eric Matos, with seven tackles and an interception, Mayfield, with seven tackles, Nichols with six tackles and Tane Olan with two tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery led the defense for Bitburg (3-0), which travels to Mannheim on Friday night. A Bitburg victory would clinch the II-North crown for the Barons and put them at home on Oct. 23 in the D-II quarterfinals.

SHAPE is to host International School of Brussels, also 1-2, on Saturday in what amounts to a playoffs-elimination game for the loser.
