KANDERN, Germany — Stopper Karis Brauer foiled the SHAPE attack all day, and midfielder Sarah Stanciu turned a pass from Julianna Townsend into the only score of the game as the Black Forest Academy Falcons knocked off the powerful Lady Spartans 1-0 in the conference and season opener for both teams.

Stanciu’s strike came midway though the second half, and the Brauer-led defense allowed BFA goalkeepers Maria Golike and Jen Sudek to make it stand up. Nicole Fox led the defensive charge for SHAPE, which got seven saves from Whitney Phillips. Three of the saves came on shots by BFA’s Susy Fisher.

Next up for SHAPE is a trip this Saturday to Stuttgart to play four-time defending European champion Patch, a team which hasn’t lost to a DODDS opponent since 1999. Black Forest plays at Hanau on Friday.

In other games Saturday:

Naples 2, Milan 0

MILAN, Italy — Meghan Dunn and Michelle Aguila each scored as the defending European Division III champion Wildcats blanked Milan.

Milan was held to just three shots, which returning all-conference player Alex Petrucci stopped for her first shutout of the season. Petrucci manned the nets brilliantly for Naples two years ago, but moved to the field last season.

Naples will host Sigonella on Saturday; Milan takes the week off as boys-only Livorno comes to visit. Milan’s next game will be March 29 at Vicenza.

Ansbach 4, Giessen 1

ANSBACH, Germany — Four different players scored for the Lady Cougars, who opened their Division III season in impressive fashion.

LaChe Sykes, April Derbak, Alison Hazen and Stacy Trendowicz each scored for Ansbach to give Giessen its first loss of the season. Giessen blanked Bad Aibling 3-0 on Friday behind a pair of goals by All-Europe second-teamer Janelle Anderson.
