Four players from Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, were selected to the All-Air Force men’s softball tryout camp starting July 31 at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.

Scott Roe, Dan Miller, John Goff and Dexter High will battle for spots on the All-Air Force team, which will defend its gold medal in the All-Armed Forces tournament scheduled for Aug. 18-Aug. 23 at Eglin. “I’m pretty excited,” said Roe, a 28-year-old staff sergeant who will make his first trip to Air Force camp. “I’m going to go down there, do what I can do and see if it’s good enough.”

The Monroe, Mich., native, assigned to Kadena’s 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron, said he is more at ease having three others from Kadena also making the trip.

“I’m not nervous right now. It might be a little nerve-wracking when I get down there,” he said.

But Roe has spoken with High, an All-Air Force player last year, and two former All-Marine players assigned to Kadena about what he’ll face when he gets to camp, he said.

“They tell me to just play your game, don’t stress, just hit the ball and keep your head in the game,” Roe said.

The tryout camp selections were announced Wednesday by All-Air Force team coach Steve Shortland at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.

All-Air Force players will vie for berths on the All-Armed Forces team, which competes in the Amateur Softball Association men’s national majors tournament Aug. 29-Sept. 1 at Jackson, Miss.
