The residents of the Big Island of Hawaii (and some in California) just wanted to send a special aloha and appreciation for servicemembers’ efforts during this horrendous Haiti disaster. We extend our wishes for the safety of the officers and crew of the USS Carl Vinson and the 82nd Airborne Division, as we know you are very busy with disaster relief in Haiti ... not an easy task.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this challenging time, as we also realize that many Americans have also suffered horrible losses.

Hawaii residents endured an earthquake close to the same magnitude (6.7 magnitude on Oct. 15, 2006). We were very fortunate to have miraculously escaped serious injury or death, so we cannot even imagine what you are having to endure under these circumstances. Everyone here is concerned for the welfare of both workers and survivors, and we pray for your strength to help you endure this horrific time! My military friends at Beale Air Force Base, Calif., helped me during the Hawaii quake. I will never forget what they did for me. Their reassurance and moral support will always be remembered.

Your kindness and what you are doing for the people of Haiti, and the American and foreign victims there, will never be forgotten. We appreciate your hard work, your dedicated service in the U.S. armed forces and your strength of professional and personal resolve during such a challenging mission.

Godspeed, and best wishes for a safe mission, and especially a safe return for all souls, as well as for Americans and others who are suffering during this horrific crisis.

Thank you for being there to help. God bless each and every soul of every one of our military men and women.

Marjorie Chase-KapaauKapa’au, Hawaii
