Please add my name to the list of those who object to the closing of RAF Fairford, England’s lodging ("Don’t close base’s lodging," letter, Feb. 18).

Not only is Fairford a splendid location for visiting the Cotswolds and the surrounding historically rich area, Stirling House is also a well-run, hospitable facility. Perhaps more importantly, Stirling House directly connects its guests to the history of Allied efforts in World War II. The photographs of the monumental efforts launched from RAF Fairford lining the walls of Stirling House alone are worth a visit for anyone interested in the heritage of armed service.

I can’t help thinking Fairford [lodging] could readily become a part of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation program and thereby maintain the facility and its significant connections to a distinguished past.

My wife and I have stayed at Stirling House annually for the past 26 years. I hope others have the good fortune to stay there in the future. Hence, this plea to keep this special place open.

Brig. Gen. Jack M. Shuttleworth (retired)Colorado Springs, Colo.
