However if one has a special invitation or is lucky then the experience of seeing the national sport of Japan at close distance and the wrestlers in all their sweat and blood is unforgettable. And if you are extremely lucky you can even rub shoulders with the great Yokozuna himself.

The shortlists for the 8th annual Sony World Photography Awards were announced last month, showcasing the best of the best in world photography by professionals, youths and everyone in between.

Judges from the World Photographic Academy will comb over the remaining entries to pick the winners, to be announced March 31 for the Open and Youth categories, and April 23 for the remainder. The competition said it received its highest number of submissions this time around, at more than 173,000. The winners of the professional categories will compete for a $25,000 prize and the title of L'Iris d'Or/Photographer of the Year.
