Dozens of World War II veterans arrived in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, many of them to view for the first time the memorial that honors their service to the country.

The veterans, many of them from Kansas, were greeted at the National World War II Memorial by their former senator, Bob Dole, himself a decorated veteran.

The one-day trip to the nation's capital was arranged through the non-profit Honor Flight Network, with much of the funding provided by a World War II Marine Corps veteran, philanthropist Norm Polsky.
